Our Rear-View Mirror Informs the New Year

    Alt Tag

The New Year is looking brighter thanks to the COVID-19 vaccines. But having just passed the one-year mark, a look in our rear-view mirror reminds us of the toll the pandemic has taken.  Many of the programs TMA Foundation has recently funded address the negative health impacts that misinformation and anti-science bias can cause. Part of the COVID toll has been on the health and wellbeing of physicians who have delivered the best care possible while lacking PPE and battling practices that spread the virus rather than contain it. To address this strain, TMAF awarded grants to seven county medical societies to start or enhance their physician health and wellness programs.

The foundation will continue to seize opportunities for health improvement, reinforce science-based health care decision making and much more in 2021 with your support and your volunteer spirit.  We’re grateful for all you make possible.

    Yours in good health,

    Susan M. Pike, MD
    President, TMA Foundation

  • Award Winners Target Health Disparities

Thousands of underserved Texans in Dallas/Fort Worth and Galveston will have greater access to health care, locally grown food, and COVID-19 testing thanks to three not-for-profits that recently received TMAF’s 2021 John P. McGovern Champion of Health Awards.

Grants of $3,000 each were awarded to two second-place winners, Seeding Galveston Urban Farm Project, Galveston and The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth COVID-19 Solutions Project. • Top Donors Honored

Sixteen TMA and TMA Alliance members recently became new or upgraded Major Donors and were recognized at the virtual TMA Winter Conference. They join 249 other Major Donors on the digital display in the TMA building and the TMAF web site who individually or as a couple have donated $10,000 and more cumulatively to TMAF.

Top upgraded Major Donor, Gregory R. Johnson, MD, SFHM, Houston, achieved the Benefactor level with years of support of future physicians through TMA’s Minority Scholarship Program. “Texas is an increasingly diverse state and I hope my support helps ensure we can meet these needs with a more diverse physician population.”

  • How Donors Are Impacting Texans in 2021

Thanks to the generosity of a record number of donors in 2020, TMAF grants are supporting 30 initiatives that will help uninsured and underserved Texans facing chronic health conditions, who lack access to care, and need science-based information to make health decisions.

All programs funded by TMAF are developed and carried out by TMA and TMAA members in collaboration with community organizations that share the passion to improve the health of all Texans.
