    As 2020 comes to a close, I want each and every donor to know how meaningful your support has been this year.   • Grants Address Stress and Burnout

     
    Nearly $38,000 in TMAF physician health and wellness (PHW) grants have been awarded to the Travis, McLennan, Ector and Smith county medical societies. TMAF established the PHW fund to help county medical societies help TMA members through confidential counseling, yoga and other strategies. More grants will be announced in December.

  • New Immunization Campaign for 2021

    The foundation board recently approved an $81,500 grant to a new TMA immunization campaign to address alarming drops in immunization rates and increased distrust in vaccines among some Texans. Vaccines Defend What Matters (VDWM) is the association’s new integrated, multimedia public health education and advocacy effort to overcome vaccine hesitancy and increase vaccination rates in Texas. VDWM sends a strong message from today’s medical heroes that choosing to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and other infectious diseases safeguards health, jobs, schools, and the Texas economy.  VDWM replaces TMA’s Be Wise – ImmunizeSM community education and outreach program, which ends Dec. 31, after a 16-year run. TMA will continue to offer Local Impact Grants for shot clinics and immunization education as part of VDWM.

    The new public health initiative has three primary aims: To educate leaders and policymakers about the importance of vaccines, inform physicians about how to counter vaccine hesitancy among their patients, and enlighten the public about the positive impact vaccination can have on their lives. Clinical expertise for content and evaluation will come from the TMA Council on Science and Public Health and Committee on Infectious Disease and communications oversight from the TMA Council on Health Promotion.   • New Tax Benefits for Philanthropy

     

    A special new provision allows more people to easily deduct up to $300 in donations to qualifying charities this year.

    Following tax law changes made earlier this year, cash donations of up to $300 made before Dec. 31, 2020, are now deductible for taxpayers who do not itemize their returns. And taxpayers who do itemize may now deduct up to 100 percent of their 2020 Adjusted Gross Income. Learn more about these provisions of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act by consulting with your tax advisor on how this affects your particular circumstance.   • Collaboration Keeps Texans Healthy

    The COVID-19 public health emergency has led some Texans to delay preventive care such as screenings and immunizations, or even to put off needed medical care. The good news is TMAF grants support the efforts of Texas physicians, their spouses and physicians-in-training who collaborate with local organizations such as shelters and non-profit clinics to meet “the greatest needs.”  These include 20 programs that have provided high-risk, uninsured Texans with flu, pneumonia, and other vaccines.

  • More Good News


    • TMAF has already approved or allocated more than half a million dollars for TMA and Family of Medicine 2021 health improvement and science initiatives.

    • Nine Texas science teachers were honored through the 2020 TMA Ernest and Sarah Butler Awards for Excellence in Science Teaching. This program year marks the 30th anniversary of the awards, designed to motivate teachers to inspire future doctors and scientists. Learn more and meet the winners.

    • Despite cancellation due to COVID-19, the 27th annual gala raised an estimated $254,942. TMAF is very grateful to this year’s ticket purchasers and sponsors who donated their payments to TMAF in support of its important mission: “to fund initiatives with the power to improve the health of all Texans.”
