From “I Care” to “Ways to Help”

The health care needs we see in our practices and in our communities can be, well, overwhelming at times. But when we care, we’re fortunate that TMA Foundation provides ways to help. Here are four ways we can make a difference: 1. Set up a recurring gift to TMAF, 2. join a TMAF leadership circle, 3. volunteer to carry out a TMA Hard Hats for Little Heads or Walk With a Doc Texas event, or 4. spread the word among friends and colleagues by sharing this newsletter, our annual report or our monthly email with friends and family. Every donation enables physicians and their families and medical students and collaborators to make a lasting impact  on the health of ALL Texans. Visit www.tmaf.org to learn more.

Thank you and Happy New Year,

    Michael E. Speer, MD
    President, TMA Foundation

  • Putting Dollars Where They Matter

There’s still time to make a year-end gift, get an additional tax-deduction and feel good that you’re putting your dollars where they matter. That’s what Amy Whited, a TMAF board member from Austin, shares in her short video message about the importance of instilling the value of good health in children.

Your year-end donation, particularly to our Greatest Need and General Endowment, strengthens our position in the New Year to support innovative programs and affords operational stability. Please make your secure online year-end gift today. For personal assistance or questions, call Marilyn Anderson, TMAF Data Manager, at (512) 370-1466.

  • Communities Address Diverse Health Needs

    HHLH2020

Chronic health conditions, physician health and wellness and health improvement for justice-involved youth are just a few of the community-based initiatives that soon will be conducted by TMA and TMA Alliance members and their community collaborators thanks to grants TMAF recently approved for these and other local programs. Pictured above: TMA Medical Student Chapters were congratulated for winning a TMAF community grant by Carla Ortique, co-chair TMAF Grants Committee (far left).

Among the 11 new grants is one to Texas Tech University Health Science Center Paul L. Foster School of Medicine TMA Medical Student Chapter. Recognized at the recent TMA Fall Conference in Austin, HOLA (Health Outreach and Literacy Alliance) Amigos Mobile Clinic will enable students to bring health services from its RotaCare Clinic to El Paso’s homeless center one Saturday each month. This mobile clinic will provide basic primary care, health screenings for hypertension and diabetes, and vaccinations for TB, hepatitis A and B, Tdap, COVID-19, and influenza. It also will provide vouchers for low/no-cost health resources such as cancer screenings.

Another new grant supports the Travis County Medical Society’s Physician Wellness Program.

The TMA Foundation grant has enabled the Travis County Medical Society to continue offering anonymous counseling to physicians in need, Finding Meaning in Medicine small group meetings, and CME with nationally known speakers. In a year where the need was greater than ever and fundraising was harder than ever, this is a lifesaver for our program.

  • New Name, Same Mission

TMA recently changed the name of one of its long-standing scholarship programs to better describe the diversity it is seeking in the physician population relative to the Texas population it serves. But to Robert Mbilinyi, a 2022 scholarship recipient who now attends Texas A&M University School of Medicine, “Diversity is important as an inspiration to future generations of physicians.” In September the TMA Board of Trustees approved changing the name of its minority scholarship to the Diversity in Medicine Scholarship on recommendation from TMA's Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Task Force. This scholarship has been funded by the Foundation since 2004 with major support from a trust fund established by Dr. Roberto J. and Agniela Bayardo and H-E-B. Read more.
