San Antonio Physician Installed as TMA President - 05/12/2025

The Texas Medical Association (TMA) installed on Saturday Jayesh B. “Jay” Shah, MD, as its 160th president during TexMed, the association’s annual conference, held in San Antonio this year. Dr. Shah is an internist, hyperbaric medicine, and wound care specialist in San Antonio. He is the first Indian American to serve as president in the association’s 172-year history.

One might not think music and organized medicine have much in common, but for Joi Smith of Tyler – the newly installed president of the Texas Medical Association Alliance – it has been the perfect marriage, both literally and figuratively. The community service and advocacy arm of TMA installed Ms. Smith as its newest president Saturday during TexMed, the association’s annual conference, held this year in San Antonio.

The Texas Medical Association elected Bradford W. Holland, MD, president-elect, eventually to become the association’s 161st president. The Waco otolaryngologist was elected on Saturday during TexMed, TMA’s annual conference, held in San Antonio this year. The last time TMA elected a president from Waco was over five decades ago.

Health Policy Expert Selected as TMA VP of Medical Economics - 04/14/2025

Robert C. Bennett, an Austin-based health policy expert, was named the Texas Medical Association’s (TMA’s) vice president of medical economics. In his new role, Mr. Bennett will develop and manage TMA’s medical economic policy and advocacy at the state and national level. He also will develop strategies and support services that help physicians navigate health care rules and regulations, while leading a staff division.
