Texas Medical Association Bylaws provide that the board shall organize by electing a chair, a vice chair, and a secretary, and that the chair shall appoint committees as needed. In May 2006, the board elected C. Bruce Malone, MD, as chair and reelected Lyle S. Thorstenson, MD, as vice chair. A Tomas Garcia III, MD, was elected secretary. The reelection of Josie R. Williams, MD, and the election of Michael E. Speer, MD, filled at-large positions on the board's executive committee. Ex officio members of the board's executive committee are the chair and vice chair of the board and the president of the association, Ladon W. Homer, MD. The board also welcomed Leslie K. Pidgeon, DO, as the first resident/fellow appointee to the board and Lindsay K. Botsford as the medical student special appointee for 2006-07.

 

Each member of the board is assigned to a team representing one of the association's four goals.  Teams are intended to work closely with assigned staff to monitor programs and activities, provide input on changes in direction, evaluate measurement tools, and review outcomes.  The teams also serve a liaison function with other components of the association (e.g., councils and committees) to assure that policy development and programs support the strategies, goals, mission, and vision of the association.

Appointments for 2006-07 are as follows:  Practice Viability (protect, improve, and strengthen the viability of medical practices in Texas), Carlos J. Cárdenas, MD, Carolyn A. Evans, MD, Paul B. Handel, MD, and Dr. Malone; Healthy Environment (ensure continued success in legislative, regulatory, and legal interventions to enhance the statewide environment in which Texas physicians practice medicine), William H. Fleming III, MD, Dr. Garcia, Dr. Homer, and Dr. Thorstenson; Trusted Leader (strengthen physicians' trusted leadership role within their communities and the health care team), Joe H. Cunningham, MD, Dr. Pidgeon, Priscilla Ray, MD, Dr. Speer, and Dr. Williams; One Voice (enhance the powerful, effective, and unified voice of Texas medicine), Stephen L. Brotherton, MD, Robert T. Gunby Jr., MD, William W. Hinchey, MD, and Ms. Botsford.

Other board committees for 2006-07 are Investments (Dr. Handel, chair; Dr. Malone; Dr. Speer; Dr. Homer; Dr. Ray; and TMA Foundation liaison Nick N. Shroff, MD) and Educational Scholarship and Loan (Dr. Evans, chair; Dr. Cunningham; Dr. Williams; Dr. Fleming; Dr. Pidgeon; Ms. Botsford; Dr. S.E. Thompson Scholarship Fund Trustee Kenneth I. Shine, MD; Resident and Fellow Section (RFS) alternate representative Jeremy P. Crim, MD; Medical Student Section (MSS) representative Erin B. Leedy and alternate representative Amanda I. Kem; and TMA Alliance representative James P. Davis).

Dr. Speer and Dr. Williams were reappointed liaisons to the Resident and Fellow and Medical Student sections. Drs. Hinchey, Thorstenson, Cárdenas, and Homer represent the board on the TMA/Texas Medical Liability Trust Liaison Committee. Drs. Malone, Evans, Williams, and Brotherton represent the board on the TMA/TMF Health Quality Institute Liaison Committee.

Sue Bailey was appointed in 2006 to chair the board's Committee on Physicians Benevolent Fund.  Committee members are C. B. Bruner, MD; Marvin C. Culbertson Jr., MD; Marsha Hunnicutt; Raymond C. Jess, MD; Jack C. McCoy, MD; Muriel Mendell; George Peterkin III, MD; Shirley Sanders; and Mary Helen Ware.  Dr. Evans is the board's liaison to the committee.

J. Marvin Smith III, MD, was appointed in 2006 to chair the board's History of Medicine Committee. Members are Byron L. Howard, MD, Robert C. Kimbrough III, MD, C. L. Montgomery; MD, Elgin W. Ware Jr., MD, Elizabeth B. White, MLS, and TMA Alliance representative Ann Gabbert.

With the establishment of the Council on Practice Management Services in May 2006 (BOT Report 17-A-06), the board discharged its Committee on TMA Physician Services.  Two other board committees were reappointed.  The TMA Committee on Performance Excellence is chaired by Bohn D. Allen, MD, with Clifford K. Moy, MD, Leslie H. Secrest, MD, Dr. Speer, Charlotte H. Smith, MD, Susan M. Strate, MD, and Dr. Williams as members.  The Texas Medical Association Library Subcommittee for the Ervin E. and Gertrude K. Baden Trust is chaired by Dr. Thorstenson, with Dr. Cunningham, Dr. Malone, Dr. Williams, and Dr. Fleming as members.
