Subject: Appointments to Physician Advisory Committees or Other Components of HMOs and Health Insurance Companies

In May 2005, the House of Delegates adopted BOT Report 18-A-06 which states, in part, "when a health insurance company or HMO requests recommendations for appointment to a physician advisory committee or any other component, the TMA president shall recommend for appointment individuals who best represent TMA's position, and the names of those individuals recommended by TMA and subsequently appointed by the health insurance company or HMO will be reported to the House of Delegates for information at its next meeting.
In July 2006, the Board of Trustees approved the nomination of David C. Fleeger, MD, and Robert T. Gunby Jr., MD, to serve on the Aetna Physician Advisory Committee. The board also voted to submit nominations for TMA physician participation on two United HealthCare Services, Inc., committees: the Physician Advisory Committee and a proposed Physician Administrative Advisory Committee. For these positions, the nominations of Joe H. Cunningham, MD, Robert H. Emmick Jr., MD, Clifford K. Moy, MD, and Lyle S. Thorstenson, MD, were forwarded to United by the president.
Subsequently, Aetna appointed Dr. Gunby to its Physician Advisory Committee and United appointed Dr. Thorstenson to its Physician Advisory Committee.
