First Tuesdays at the Capitol

  • The Texas Legislature meets every odd-numbered year for 140 consecutive days and will convene again Jan. 12, 2027. Legislators need to hear from you – their physician, medical student, and alliance constituents – during the session to understand how proposed legislation can potentially impact the practice of medicine in Texas.

  • Grassroots Advocacy - Getting Started

A group of doctors at First Tuesdays

TMA works tirelessly to protect your patients and strengthen your profession. What makes TMA's advocacy so powerful is the active participation of our physician members. Taking a bottom-up, grassroots approach, with TMA members conveying their concerns to policymakers, is key to our success.

First Tuesdays at the Capitol is at the heart of TMA's grassroots advocacy program. On the first Tuesday of each month when the Texas Legislature is in session, physicians, medical students, and alliance members gather at the Capitol to personally meet with lawmakers and their staff.

In preparation of First Tuesdays, here are some actions you can take:

    • The best advocacy starts long before the legislative session begins. Legislators are more likely to engage with people who have built a relationship with them. Start building that relationship by meeting with your state representative or senator in their district. Your county medical society can help you get started.
    • Read Texas Medicine Today (TMT), TMA’s daily e-newsletter for current legislative information.
    • Become informed about TMA's key issues by reviewing the resources found under State Advocacy.
