MAD Drive Bolsters Hard Hats for Little Heads

Hard Hats MAD Drive 600

A well-fitted helmet can save a child’s life, and thanks to passionate donors at the 2025 Texas Medical Association Foundation Gala, more than $50,000 will provide such gear to kids through Hard Hats for Little Heads, a signature outreach program.

The Make-a-Difference (MAD) Drive, a cornerstone of the gala, is the single largest funding source for Hard Hats for Little Heads, which began in 1994 after pain specialist Larry Driver, MD, witnessed a preventable head injury in his neighborhood in San Angelo. While Dr. Driver has since relocated to Houston, the program has continued on and provided nearly 430,000 free bike helmets to Texas children, promoting safety, physical activity, and health education.

At the 32nd annual gala, the MAD Drive once again demonstrated the power of collective generosity, as guests, inspired by the tangible difference their contributions make, raised $53,140 to provide helmets in 2026. These funds support the program’s mission to prevent injuries, reduce obesity, and deliver science-based education.

The fundraising victory includes a $10,500 challenge match that came from a dedicated anonymous donor couple. Their continued support, now in its 13th year, helped galvanize attendees to meet and exceed the challenge, ensuring the program’s continued impact in underserved communities.

Learn how to host a helmet giveaway on the Hard Hats for Little Heads webpage. Physicians in the Texas Neurological Society or Texas Pediatric Society may be able to distribute up to 50 helmets at no cost.
