TMA Elects North Texas, Houston Area Physicians to Board

Statewide Officers Elected, Reelected at Annual Conference

The Texas Medical Association (TMA) has elected representatives from North Texas and the Houston area to serve on its Board of Trustees

These physicians will decide and implement TMA policies and deliberate various health care issues that impact the health and lives of Texans.

Physicians from across the state conducted the elections Saturday during TexMed 2025, TMA’s annual conference, in San Antonio.

Physicians elected or reelected to the TMA Board of Trustees (listed alphabetically by city and member name):

Dallas public health and general preventive medicine physician John Carlo, MD: Dr. Carlo was reelected to the TMA Board of Trustees. TMA first elected him to the board in 2022. The 29-year TMA member has chaired the Councils on Science and Public Health, Legislation, and Socioeconomics. Dr. Carlo also played a lead role in helping TMA respond to the COVID-19 pandemic as a member of the association’s COVID-19 Task Force. He also helped Dallas address the 2014 Ebola scare. TMA also reelected Dr. Carlo to represent Texas doctors in the American Medical Association (AMA) House of Delegates. He also was a president of the Dallas County Medical Society.

 Dallas palliative care physician Mark Casanova, MD: TMA elected Dr. Casanova vice speaker of the TMA House of Delegates policymaking body, a board position. Dr. Casanova has been a TMA member for nearly 30 years and has held many leadership roles. He was a member of TMA’s Council on Legislation and chair of TMA’s Councils on Health Service Organizations and Constitution and Bylaws. Dr. Casanova was also a member of TMA’s COVID-19 Task Force during the height of the pandemic. The task force provided information to physicians and the public about the virus when it was rapidly spreading. He is a former president of the Dallas County Medical Society

Dallas internist Tazeen Rizvi, DO: Dr. Rizvi was elected to a one-year term as the TMA Resident and Fellow Section representative on the board. Residents and fellows are physicians in their final specialty training before practicing medicine independently. She is a member of the Dallas County Medical Society.

Fort Worth radiologist Tilden Childs III, MD: A TMA member for 45 years, Dr. Childs was newly elected to TMA’s Board of Trustees. Dr. Childs has held leadership positions in various local, state, and national medical societies and hospital staff committees, commissions, and councils, including as immediate past chair of TMA’s Council on Legislation. Dr. Childs has represented the American College of Radiology in the American Medical Association House of Delegates for more than 10 years. He also served as president of the Tarrant County Medical Society.

Galveston medical student Grayson Jackson: Mr. Jackson was elected to a one-year term as the TMA Medical Student Section representative on the board. He is a student at the UTMB John Sealy School of Medicine working toward his medical degree and is also pursuing a doctoral degree. He previously served as an alternate medical student representative on the Texas Delegation to the AMA.

Houston otolaryngologist and plastic surgeon Bradford Patt, MD: Dr. Patt was reelected to the TMA Board of Trustees. TMA first elected him to the board in 2022. Dr. Patt is a member of TMA’s Educational Scholarship and Loan Committee and served as consultant to the TMA Council on Legislation. As a member of TMA’s Professional Liability Committee, he helped inform newly elected state legislators about the importance of Texas’ medical liability laws. The past president of the Harris County Medical Society also chaired the county society’s delegation to the TMA House of Delegates in 2019.

Little Elm internal medicine specialist John G. Flores, MD: The TMA House of Delegates elected Dr. Flores as house speaker, a board position. He is concluding four years of service as vice speaker. He also has chaired TMA’s Council on Socioeconomics and Council on Health Service Organizations. He was reelected today to the Texas Delegation to the AMA for which he serves as chair. He also chairs the AMA Organized Medical Staff Section’s Governing Council, and he chaired the AMA Election Committee. Dr. Flores is a former president of the Denton County Medical Society and co-chair of the Lone Star Caucus.

TMA is the largest state medical society in the nation, representing more than 59,000 physician and medical student members. It is located in Austin and has 110 component county medical societies around the state. TMA’s key objective since 1853 is to improve the health of all Texans.
