Job Screening Checklist

Include these elements in your employment process:

  • Develop a standard application form for the practice. Don't rely just on résumés.
  • Get the applicant's permission for references and background checks. A statement to this effect can be included on the application, or you can attach a waiver.
  • Check references. Have the applicant provide more than just his or her supervisor's name. Ask for the names of co-workers so you possibly can find out more detailed information than just date of employment, position, and eligibility for rehire.
  • Use basic skills testing to determine specific levels of skill. For example, have a coding candidate actually review and code sample charts.
