May 25, 2023

The Texas Medical Association (TMA) Medical Student Section recognized Radhika Patel, a second-year medical student at the Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, with its 2023 Student of the Year award. TMA announced Ms. Patel’s award in Fort Worth during TexMed, TMA’s annual conference.

TM23 Student of Year Award “It is an honor to be nominated and selected for this award,” said Ms. Patel. “Like many other students, I came into medical school with a fierce passion for advocacy and service work. Through TMA, I was able to take that passion and translate it into action.”

Anand Singh, a fellow student at the medical school, nominated Ms. Patel. “She has done so much as a chapter president to build critical infrastructure and elevate our nascent chapter as a leader in TMA over this past year,” Mr. Singh said.

He also said Ms. Patel is dedicated to serving her community through organized medicine. “Radhika has identified the needs of her population and expanded her impact by effectively leading multiple initiatives.”

Ms. Patel hopes she can inspire other medical students to become passionate about advocacy and get more involved in organized medicine.

She plans to graduate in 2025 with her medical degree.

Since 1998, the TMA Medical Student Section has recognized an outstanding student member who excels in furthering the section’s goals and policies to improve Texas’ health care system. The chapter aims to engage students in organized medicine by encouraging their involvement in local county medical societies, TMA, and the American Medical Association.

TMA is the largest state medical society in the nation, representing more than 57,000 physician and medical student members. It is located in Austin and has 110 component county medical societies around the state. TMA’s key objective since 1853 is to improve the health of all Texans.
