Member Spotlight: Alyssa Greenwood Francis, Medical Student Section Chair

In addition to cultivating relationships with students, residents, and physicians across Texas, Alyssa Greenwood Francis says her participation in the Texas Medical Association Medical Student Section has markedly improved her communication and leadership skills.

In fact, Ms. Francis, a fourth-year medical student at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Paul L. Foster School of Medicine in El Paso, is now chair of the section and urges her fellow students to also get involved early. “As [future physicians], it is imperative for medical students to be involved in organized medicine and policymaking. Whether we plan on going into academics or private practice, we know that health policy will affect not only patient outcomes, but also how we practice medicine.”

She also volunteers for RotaCare El Paso, a free walk-in clinic in partnership with the Rotary Club and TMA’s medical student chapter that provides free medical care to the uninsured. She encourages her colleagues: “If you are a medical student or physician in El Paso, please come volunteer.”
