The Texas Medical Association Medical Student Section (TMA-MSS) has named the TMA Chapter at UT Southwestern Medical School its 2022 Chapter of the Year.
“Our chapter was ecstatic to find out we had been awarded chapter of the year. The students have worked to reinvigorate the spirit of advocacy within our university and have done an outstanding job,” said Whitney Stuard, immediate past co-president of the medical school’s student chapter. “I know this award means a great deal to our students who are excited their hard work has been noticed.”
The chapter served the Dallas community during the pandemic by organizing vaccine drives for COVID-19, influenza, and Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis).
“During a time in which COVID-19 has forced many organizations to scale back, our chapter has fought hard to continue to expand and contribute meaningful work,” said Tanooha Veeramachaneni, a second-year UT Southwestern student who nominated her chapter for the honor.
The medical school chapter also wrote resolutions to propose new TMA policy, conducted resolution-writing workshops for students, and participated in editorial activities.
“Our chapter is one of the leaders in policy writing within the TMA-MSS with more than one-third of this year’s policies authored by someone from UT Southwestern,” Ms. Stuard said.
The annual Chapter of the Year Award, which TMA launched in 1998, recognizes the TMA-MSS chapter that excels in upholding the Medical Student Section’s goals and policies for a better Texas. The award recognizes leadership, dedication, and service to TMA and the American Medical Association (AMA).
TMA is the largest state medical society in the nation, representing nearly 56,000 physician and medical student members. It is located in Austin and has 110 component county medical societies around the state. TMA’s key objective since 1853 is to improve the health of all Texans.
