Following the success of the highly attended “Ask-the-Expert: The Business of Personal Finance” panel at its 2024 Business of Medicine conference – an addition to the event’s schedule as a response to member requests – the Texas Medical Association is hosting another event centered on financial literacy for physicians on May 9 at TexMed in San Antonio.
“Physicians spend years learning about medicine, but not necessarily how to manage their finances,” said Kimberly Monday, a TMA Board of Trustees member and moderator of the previous panel. “TMA is trying to fill that gap by inviting experts in that space to share their insight with our members.”
The upcoming event, also moderated by Dr. Monday, will again answer members’ questions on debt management, educational planning, physicians’ common financial needs, and benefits offered by TMA-affiliated vendors.
Physicians entering their careers will learn how to mitigate student loan debt, invest wisely, and select the right investor or financial adviser to help manage their finances. Mid-level and established physicians will receive recommendations on lending options when starting their own practice and how to properly save for retirement.
The panel’s ensemble of guest speakers will include:
- Wealth manager Monte Byrd;
- Head of Practice Solutions at Panacea Financial, Brandon Finazzo;
- Texas Medical Liability Trust Business Relations Manager and Product Specialist Mary Gonzales;
- Otolaryngologist and founder of APTA Investments Vasu Kakarlapudi, MD;
- Vice President of Partners Real Estate, Connor Watson; and
- TMA Insurance Trust Executive Director Guy Patterson.
The session will run alongside TexMed’s networking lunch hour, from 11:30 am to 12:15 pm in the House of Delegates, accessible through the Expo Hall, where attendees are invited to browse the latest health care technologies, services, and product knowledge.
Belinda Bininger, TMA’s director of business development, says she anticipates the session will garner a large crowd, and thus will be the only event with designated seating during Friday's complimentary lunch.
Attend TexMed in San Antonio May 8-10. A $25 registration fee will be charged for on-site registrants.
