Do you know a science teacher who brings the subject to life, perhaps inspiring students to pursue a related career, even in medicine? If so, nominate him or her for the Texas Medical Association’s Ernest and Sarah Butler Awards for Excellence in Science Teaching.

Each year, the awards recognize science teachers at the elementary-, middle-, and high-school levels who share their energy and enthusiasm for science with their students. Three science teachers, one at each level, will receive a Distinguished Award, plus a cash prize and a resource grant for their school. In addition, one teacher will receive a Grand Prize Award, and one teacher with less than seven years’ experience will receive a Rookie Award, also with cash prizes.

Texas full-time public and private school science teachers with a minimum of two years’ completed classroom experience in all areas of science are eligible.

The 2020-21 grand prize winner, Arlevia Davis, said, “As a teacher who has been teaching for 19 years, I have often felt unappreciated and forgotten. This award has reignited a passion in me to reach more students and continue this path of helping young people achieve their dreams.”

Ms. Davis, who teaches ninth-grade biology at Legacy High School in Mansfield, supplements her classroom lessons with music videos she creates under the name “Sciyoncé.”

Award winners will be announced at TexMed in late April 2022. Nominations are due Dec. 3 for the 2021-22 awards. TMA reaches out to nominated teachers to encourage them to submit application materials. Teachers also can self-nominate.

If you have questions, email TMA or visit www.texmed.org/Teachers for more information.

The Ernest and Sarah Butler Awards for Excellence in Science Teaching are made possible by a grant from the Texas Medical Association Foundation, which is supported through an endowment generously established at the TMA Foundation by Dr. and Mrs. Ernest C. Butler and gifts from physicians and their families.
