Subject: Committee Activity Update

HB 120 by Rep. Glenda Dawson and Sen. Judith Zaffirini
The committee worked closely with the Texas Transplantation Society in implementation of HB 120 from the 79th Legislative Session. This bill establishes a new registry of organ donors that will be accessible to any hospital by organ procurement organizations.
TexMed 2006
The committee collaborated with the Texas Transplantation Society to present a four-hour CME program at TexMed 2006. Topics included: Improving the Myocardium: The Application of Stem Cells for Repair; Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplants: Identifying Patients Who Need Them and the Donors Who Can Provide Them; and Should Your Patients Donate Blood for Themselves? Should They Ask Their Friends? and Controversies in Autologous and Directed Donation Programs. In addition, the committee hosted a booth in the exhibit hall featuring information on organ donation and transplantation. A ten-minute video discussing organ and tissue donation, featuring Phil H. Berry Jr., MD, also was presented at the information booth.
Other Activities
The committee is discussing emergency preparation as it relates to blood safety and tissue and organ donation issues. It is currently working on a joint policy with the Committee on Maternal and Perinatal Health on mother's milk banking in Texas. In addition, the committee will continue to submit articles to Texas Medicine and other publications regarding blood and tissue safety and donation and transplantation issues .
