Medicine-Friendly State Senator to Speak at TMA Winter Conference

Kolkhorst

State Sen. Lois Kolkhorst (R-Brenham), chair of the powerful Committee on Health & Human Services for the current session of the Texas Legislature, will be the keynote speaker during the Texas Medical Association’s virtual Winter Conference.

Senator Kolkhorst, who has served in the Capitol since 2001, has long been a champion for some of medicine’s key legislative issues.

During the 2019 session, two of her bills aimed at improving maternal health in Texas became law:

  • Senate Bill 750, which directs the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) to look for other ways to extend maternal health coverage through the Healthy Texas Women program; and
  • Senate Bill 748, which expanded pregnancy medical home pilot programs to new sites and directed the state to test the use of telemedicine, telehealth, and telemonitoring to improve postpartum care.

Senator Kolkhorst also is a voting member of Texas’ COVID-19 Expert Vaccine Allocation Panel, which is responsible for developing the state’s vaccine allocation strategies.

Registration is still open for TMA’s Winter Conference – a completely virtual event set for Friday, Jan. 29 and Saturday, Jan. 30. TMA members can register online for free.

Friday’s schedule includes a discussion on evaluation and management (E&M) coding changes with Carra Benson, manager of TMA Practice Management and Reimbursement Services.

You’ll also be able to visit exhibitor booths, and earn points to be entered to win one of four Amazon gift cards.

On Saturday morning, the live schedule kicks off at 9 am with a welcome from TMA President Diana L. Fite, MD. General session programming concludes with a panel of state and national physician leaders to address 2021 legislative priorities. Panelists include Susan R. Bailey, MD, president of the American Medical Association;  and Debra Patt, MD, and Russ Kridel, MD, chair of and consultant to TMA’s Council on Legislation, respectively.

The business meetings schedule is available now online, along with the entire agenda for the weekend.
