Here are a few statistics to wrap your head around:

  • 144,000 Texans sustain a traumatic brain injury each year – one every 4 minutes.
  • More than 381,000 Texans live with a disability because of a traumatic brain injury.
  • More than 5,700 Texas residents are permanently disabled by traumatic brain injury each year.

Those statistics from the Texas Brain Injury Alliance underscore the extent of traumatic brain injuries as a public health threat. In fact, males ages 14 to 24 are at the greatest risk of sustaining such an injury.

To help you prevent and/or care for traumatic brain injuries, the Texas Medical Association has created a web page about student-athlete concussions to raise awareness among physicians, student-athletes and their parents, and coaches.

The Pediatric Concussion Awareness and Prevention page features ways you can promote head safety in your community; resources such as free online training and CME; resources for coaches, parents, and student athletes, such as posters for locker rooms and offices; blog posts on concussions written by TMA member physicians; and more.

The web page also has information on TMA’s Hard Hats for Little Heads program, which helps physicians promote bicycle safety in their community through free helmet giveaways.

TMA is dedicated to curbing traumatic brain injuries among Texas’ youth. “TMA will continue to monitor developments [on] sport-related concussions; offer continuing medical education in various formats on concussions as indicated; and encourage physicians to contribute to and support updates of pediatric guidelines, providing the most recent information to TMA members,” TMA’s official policy on head injuries and sport-related concussion says.
