The celebration of Pride Month in June strives to highlight awareness of issues affecting the LGBTQ community. With this awareness also comes the need for advocacy.

Leading this charge for the Texas Medical Association is Dallas pediatrician M. Brett Cooper, MD, 2022-23 chair of TMA’s LGBTQ Health Section Executive Council. The special interest section is TMA’s newest and was formed to:

  • Study and advance the scientific basis for the care of LGBTQ patients;
  • Develop policy and resources on LGBTQ health and advance the association as a leader in providing physicians with evidence-based scientific information on the care of LGBTQ patients;
  • Address the unique issues in practice management, billing, and maintaining medical records in the care of LBGTQ patients; and
  • Communicate association policy and expertise on LGBTQ health.

Dr. Cooper says he’s seen the value of the LGBTQ Health Section because he’s witnessed firsthand “how the expertise of this section has been able to be influential in crafting TMA policy.” He believes participation in section activities and policymaking is important because “it also serves as a place for LGBTQ members and allies to gather to discuss issues important to this population, as well as gather in a social space.”
