Preparing new physicians for the business side of medicine, the Texas Medical Association offers free presentations to residency programs across the state centered on the early stages of a medical career.
Scheduling for 2026 is now open. Information sessions are free and can be customized depending on the needs of the residency program. Each “Starting Your Career” seminar, conducted live or online by TMA's practice management experts, runs for one hour, including a 15-minute question-and-answer session.
For more information about early career education for students and residents, see TMA’s Starting Your Career webpage.
Program& coordinators can request either an in-person or virtual presentation, with in-person sessions requiring a minimum of 15 attendees. Programs can choose the date and time that best works for their residents.
The flexibility is designed to accommodate residency programs as needed, says Heather Bettridge, TMA’s associate vice president of practice and information services.
“Every resident can benefit from these presentations, regardless of specialty or what practice setting they eventually enter,” she said. “We work with [residency programs] to provide the information they need, whenever and however they need it.”
The presentation’s curriculum focuses on nonclinical skills critical to starting or entering practice that new physicians may not learn in medical school or residency, including:
- Practice options;
- Contract negotiations;
- Legal organization;
- Professional affiliations;
- Licenses, certificates, and liability insurance;
- Personnel management;
- Policies and procedures;
- Vendors and suppliers;
- Managed care and credentialing;
- Financial management; and
- Marketing.
To cover the wide scope of business topics, the presentations tap a mix of specialists, including TMA’s Practice Services staff the association’s insurance and medical liability partners, Texas Medical Liability Trust and Texas Medical Association Insurance Trust, and experienced attorneys.
