Federal authorities are clarifying the legality of health plans paying claims through virtual credit cards, which typically result in fees for practices.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has released an FAQ with information on virtual credit card transactions in relation to HIPAA requirements. The new document also clarifies that if a practice requests that insurers send payment through an automated clearing house, or ACH, transaction – instead of a virtual credit card – health plans must comply with that request.

For more information, consult the FAQ, which contains a link to a related guidance letter CMS released earlier this year.

If you have any problems related to virtual credit card payments, contact the Texas Medical Association’s Reimbursement Review and Resolution Service.
