Tell Your Uninsured Patients About HealthCare.gov Marketplace Enrollment

Enrollment in the federal health insurance marketplace on HealthCare.gov is now open, so it’s a good idea to let your uninsured patients know the option is there. And if they sign up by Dec. 15, their coverage will begin at the start of 2022.

Marketplace plans must cover comprehensive services, including preexisting conditions, behavioral health, and preventive services.

Texas Medical Association staff say marketplace coverage is much more affordable than in the past thanks to new funding to reduce premiums and cost-sharing, and removal of income caps. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services also increased funding for “navigators” to help applicants with application and enrollment.

Patients can estimate their costs using this Health Insurance Marketplace Calculator.

Although patients must sign up by Dec. 15 to have coverage starting on Jan. 1, 2022, the open enrollment period runs until Jan. 15, 2022.
