New Cowles Young Physician Scholarship Launched to Promote TMA Leadership Training
By Sean Price

The late Houston anesthesiologist Charles Cowles Jr., MD, believed passionately in helping young physicians become leaders. The Harris County Medical Society (HCMS) has created a new scholarship in his name to help those who want to achieve that goal.

HCMS honored the physician at TexMed 2023 in Fort Worth by announcing the formation of a scholarship designed to promote leadership among young physicians. Dr. Cowles died in December 2020 after a car accident.

The Cowles Young Physician Scholarship Endowment will be used by qualified Harris County young physicians to pursue leadership training opportunities in the Texas Medical Association, Houston internist Robert E. Jackson, MD, told physicians at TexMed’s opening session last week. Young physicians are those under 40 years old or in their first eight years of practice, according to TMA Bylaws.

Dr. Cowles started his career as a paramedic and firefighter before becoming an anesthesiologist, Dr. Jackson said. His unique background made him an international expert in operating room fire safety. He also was passionate about medical education and was chair of TMA’s Council on Medical Education when he died.

“Since Dr. Cowles always encouraged physicians to get involved early and remain leaders throughout their careers, the Harris County Medical Society [executive] board wanted to direct the scholarship dollars to young physicians,” Dr. Jackson said. “It is important for physicians, both young and old, to become leaders, have a unified voice, and help guide the future of medicine, while improving the health of all Texans.”

The Houston Academy of Medicine established the scholarship fund in December with a $50,000 gift to TMA’s Special Funds Foundation. TMA will administer and promote the scholarship in coordination with TMA Leadership College and Young Physician Section staff.

Physicians and others who want to contribute can donate online or send checks to TMA Special Funds Foundation, Attn: Cowles Young Physician Scholarship, 401 W. 15th St., Suite 100, Austin, TX 78701. The TMA Special Funds Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, and contributions are tax-deductible to the fullest extent permitted by federal law.

Harris County medical students can take advantage of HCMS Alliance scholarships created to offset the cost of medical school. The alliance scholarships are open to all third- and fourth-year medical students in good standing at a medical school in Harris County.
