Medicare Maintains Quality Reporting Resources for Small Practices
By Joey Berlin

Despite the recent expiration of an initiative to help small, rural, and underserved practices navigate Medicare’s Quality Payment Program (QPP), the agency is still offering help to those practices through several avenues, including a new monthly newsletter geared toward small practices.

The QPP Small, Underserved, and Rural Support (SURS) program ended on Feb. 15 after an unsuccessful attempt by congressional lawmakers, including Rep. Michael Burgess, MD (R-Texas), to extend it through legislation. But in a March 7 email release, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) reiterated that it was “committed to providing continued support and educational resources for small, underserved and rural practices participating in QPP,” including the newsletter and several other options. Those include:

  • The QPP listserv, which disseminates updates on the program and upcoming deadlines. Practices can subscribe by entering their email address in a form located at the bottom of any CMS.gov webpage;
  • The Quality Payment Program Service Center – which can address both basic and complex issues – available at (866) 288-8292 or via email Monday through Friday between 7 am and 7 pm CT;
  • The Support for Small Practices page of the QPP website, which was recently updated to include frequently asked questions and answers; and
  • Upcoming webinars and trainings that will be listed on the QPP Webinar Library.

Smaller practices can also consult the 2022 MIPS Quick Start Guide for Small Practices and the MIPS Policies for Small Practices documents.
