Medicare Extends MIPS Relief for Groups
By Joey Berlin

Because of the COVID-19 public health emergency, Medicare has reopened applications from certain groups for its hardship exception under Medicare’s Merit-Based Incentive System (MIPS) extreme and uncontrollable circumstances policy.

Groups, virtual groups, and alternative payment model entities that participated in MIPS in 2021 and  cite COVID-19 as their “triggering event” can apply for relief through March 31 at 7 pm CT. Applying allows a participant to request one or more MIPS performance categories to be reweighted to 0%.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services previously applied the extreme and uncontrollable circumstances policy automatically for individual clinicians who participated in MIPS during 2021.

For more information, consult the 2021 MIPS Extreme and Uncontrollable Circumstances Exception Application Guide. You can also refer to the Quality Payment Program COVID-19 Response Fact Sheet.
