Physician Health and Wellness Education Committee

Development and review of TMA’s physician health and wellness CME activities are overseen by the Committee on Physician Health and Wellness (PHWC) Ad Hoc Committee on Education. The education committee manages PHW live, virtual, and hybrid-format CME activities, reaching more than 3,000 Texas physicians, resident physicians, and medical students annually.

Committee Member Biographies

Sejal S. Mehta, MD, MBA, of Plano is president of Psychiatric Medical Associates. The psychiatrist serves on the Texas Physician Health Program governing board and chairs TMA’s Committee on Physician Health and Wellness. Dr. Mehta earned her medical degree at B.J. Medical College in India.

Toi B. Harris, MD, of Missouri City is associate provost of institutional diversity and inclusion and student services in the Office of the Provost at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Harris, a psychiatrist, also holds dual faculty positions as a professor for the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and the Department of Pediatrics. She played a pivotal role in planning the inaugural TMA PHW Exchange held at Baylor in 2019. Dr. Harris earned her medical degree at the University of Missouri School of Medicine.

Bethany E. Powell, MD, of Galveston is founder of TEAM Healthcare in Galveston. The family physician chairs the PHWC Ad Hoc Committee on Education. Dr. Powell earned her medical degree at Albert Szent-Gyorgyi Medical University in Hungary.

Joane G. Baumer, MD, resides in Fort Worth and Ventura, Calif. The retired family physician practiced at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth during her medical career. Dr. Baumer also was an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Family Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical School. She is a graduate of the University of California School of Medicine, and completed her residency and internship at the UCLA Ventura County Medical Center.

Viki Chancellor, MD, of Duncanville practiced obstetrics-gynecology at Mansfield Methodist Medical Center and Methodist Charlton Medical Center until her retirement. She served as the department chair of the physician health program at both hospitals. Dr. Chancellor currently serves on the Texas Physician Health Program governing board and is vice chair of the PHWC Ad Hoc Committee on Education. She is a graduate of UT Southwestern Medical School, where she also completed her residency.

Kenneth G. Davis, MD, CPE, of Conroe founded the Conroe Family Medicine Residency Program after leaving his private practice as a family physician. Dr. Davis currently serves as part-time faculty for the program, which operates within the Lone Star Family Health Center in Conroe, and has served on its board of directors. He is a graduate of The University of Texas Medical Branch School of Medicine. Dr. Davis completed his residency at UCLA San Bernardino County Medical Center.

Juliana Fort, MD, MPH, MBA, of Dallas is a staff psychiatrist at Shreveport Veteran’s Affairs in Shreveport, La., and is associate professor of child and adolescent psychiatry at UT Southwestern Medical Center. She is a graduate of Louisiana State University School of Medicine in Shreveport. Dr. Fort completed her residency in general psychiatry at Tulane Medical School in New Orleans, as well as a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry.

Jessica Gale, DO, MS, of San Antonio is a recent graduate of the University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine. While a medical student, Dr. Gale was founding chapter president for the school's TMA Medical Student Section. She also helped establish a Psychiatry Interest Group, a Mentality Initiative for Nurturing Doctors chapter, a student committee at the Bexar County Medical Society, and a student chapter of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians. Prior to starting medical school, Dr. Gale taught yoga and meditation. She instructed a yoga session at the inaugural TMA PHW Exchange at Baylor in 2019.

Cheryl L. Hurd, MD, of Fort Worth is program director and vice chair of education for the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at JPS Health Network. She is an associate adjunct professor at University of North Texas Health Science Center Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine. The psychiatrist also is a professor in the Department of Clinical Sciences at TCU and UNTHSC School of Medicine. Dr. Hurd is a graduate of Texas A&M University College of Medicine. She completed her internship and residency at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Phoenix, as well as a fellowship in internal medicine and psychiatry.

Phoung N. Huynh, MD, of Dublin, Ohio, is a family physician at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. She also is the medical center’s clinical lead for primary care addiction medicine and serves on the board of the Ohio Physician Health Program. Dr. Huynh is a graduate of Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland. She completed her internship and residency at the University of Michigan hospitals. Her fellowship followed in primary care sports medicine at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland.

Anita Jimenez-Belinoski, MD, of Montgomery served as medical director at 1960 Pediatrics, a branch of Texas Children’s Pediatric Associates in Houston. The retired pediatrician is board certified by the American Board of Pediatric Medicine. Dr. Jimenez-Belinoski is a graduate of Baylor College of Medicine, where she also completed her internship and residency. She is an active member of Faith in Practice and has traveled with the nonprofit organization to Guatemala on several mission trips.

Kassim A. Khan, MD, JD, of Fort Worth is a graduate of the University of Missouri School of Medicine. The ophthalmologist completed his internship and residency at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Lubbock. A fellowship followed in glaucoma and anterior segment surgery in Boston. He also earned a degree from The University of Texas School of Law.

Ashok I. Khushalani, MD, of Houston is a private practice psychiatrist for the Memorial Hermann Mental Health Crisis Clinic. He has held clinical appointments at Baylor College of Medicine and McGovern Medical School at UTHealth. Dr. Khushalani is a graduate of Seth Gordhandas Sundadras Medical College in India. He completed his residency in psychiatry at New York University Bellevue Medical Center. His fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry followed at Baylor College of Medicine.

Sheila LoboPrabhu, MD, of Houston is a staff psychiatrist at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. She is a professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. LoboPrabhu is a graduate of Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College in India. She completed her residency at the University of Michigan Medical School, followed by a fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine Affiliate Hospitals.

James W. Lomax II, MD, of Houston is a psychoanalyst and professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine. After receiving his medical degree from Baylor, the psychiatrist completed his internship at the University of Oregon in Portland, then returned to Baylor to complete his residency.

Ashley Maltz, MD, MPH, of Austin founded West Holistic Medicine. The integrative medicine internist is a graduate of The University of Texas Medical Branch School of Medicine, where she also completed her residency in internal and preventive medicine. An integrative medicine fellowship followed at Stamford Hospital in Connecticut.

Joseph John Martinez-O’Hara, MD, of Brownsville is a retired hematologist-oncologist. He is a graduate of the University of Monterrey Nuevo Leon Mexico Instituto Ciencias De La Salud. Dr. Martinez-O’Hara completed his residency and internship at South Baltimore General Hospital in The University of Maryland System. A fellowship followed in hematology and oncology at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Chander S. Mishra, MD, MBA, of Colleyville is vice chief of staff at Medical City Fort Worth, and head of the U.S. Anesthesia Partners Plaza Division. He is a graduate of the University College of Medical Sciences & Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital in India. Dr. Mishra completed his internship and residency at Caritas St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Boston, in the department of anesthesiology and pain medicine. While in Boston, the anesthesiologist also completed a fellowship in cardiothoracic anesthesia.

Anil Nanda, MD, of Lewisville practices allergy, immunology, and internal medicine in Lewisville and Flower Mound. Dr. Nanda is a graduate of Meharry Medical College in Nashville.  He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Baylor College of Medicine. His fellowship followed in allergy and immunology at National Jewish Health and University of Colorado School of Medicine.

Nahille I. Natour, MD, of Houston is an obstetrician-gynecologist at Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital. She also is a physician consultant and certified professional co-active coach. Dr. Natour is a graduate of Texas A&M University College of Medicine. She completed her residency at Baylor University Medical Center.

Debra M. Osterman, MD, of Pearland is a staff psychiatrist for the Mental Health & Mental Retardation Authority of Harris County in the Adult Forensic Unit. Dr. Osterman is a graduate of The University of Texas Medical School at Houston and completed her residency in psychiatry there.

Jeffrey M. Pinnow, MD, of Odessa is an emergency physician at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa and fellowship director in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the Texas Tech University of Health Sciences Center Permian Basin. Dr. Pinnow is a graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School and completed his residency at WellSpan York Hospital in Pennsylvania.

Julie A. Reardon, MD, of Austin is a solo practice integrative family physician. She is a graduate of the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. Dr. Reardon completed her residency at Riverside Unit-Smiley’s Point Clinic in Minnesota, and completed her fellowship at the University of Arizona’s Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine.

Kiran H. Shah, MD, of League City is a solo practice obstetrician-gynecologist in Texas City. He is a graduate of the B.J. Medical College in India. Dr. Shah completed his residency at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center, followed by his internship at NYC Health Hospital Queens in New York.

Nick Shroff, MD, of Plano is founder and president of the American Prostate Cancer Foundation. Dr. Shroff is a graduate of Christian Medical College Madras University in India. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Urology and completed a fellowship in uro-oncology. The retired urologist also is a certified yoga teacher and leads yoga classes for older adults to help combat diabetes, hypertension, and other chronic diseases.

Georgia A. Thomas, MD, of Bellaire is executive director of the Human Resources Employee Health & Well-Being Division at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. She also is a professor in the Department of Infectious Diseases, Infection Control and Employee Health Division of Internal Medicine. The internist is a graduate of the Ohio State University College of Medicine. She completed her residency in internal medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and completed a fellowship in oncology at the Ohio State University Hospital.

Sidarth Wakhlu, MD, of Dallas is a professor in the Department of Psychiatry, director of the Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship Program, and associate director of the Addiction Division in the Department of Psychiatry at UT Southwestern Medical Center. Dr. Wakhlu is a graduate of the University of Delhi/Maulana Azad Medical College in India. The psychiatrist completed his residency at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine, and received advanced training in addiction psychiatry through a fellowship at UT Southwestern Medical Center.

Carolyn Woodfork-Richardson, MD, of Bellaire is a pediatrician, and health and wellness speaker. She is a graduate of Meharry Medical College in Nashville. She completed her residency at Howard University and affiliated hospitals in Washington, D.C.
