The Lone Star Caucus (LSC) has awarded its inaugural medical student scholarships to five Texas medical students who intend to serve the state’s medically underserved populations when they begin practice.
Made up of the nonmetro, smaller county medical societies, the caucus will give the awards annually to third- and fourth-year medical students who are enrolled in good standing in a Texas medical school; have demonstrated interest in serving medically underserved populations in Texas; and exhibit strong leadership skills.
“These scholarships are a way to ensure access to medical care for Texans who live in rural and suburban areas,” said LSC Co-Chair Lenore DePagter, DO, of McAllen. “The caucus is proud to support the healthy futures of the nonmetro, rural communities of Texas.”
This year’s recipients are:
- Daniel Berry, a rising fourth-year student at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Paul L. Foster School of Medicine;
- Jordan Brown, a rising fourth-year student at Foster School of Medicine;
- Zachary Kennedy, MD, a recent graduate from The University of Texas Medical Branch School of Medicine;
- Malini Riddle, a rising third-year student at Foster School of Medicine; and
- Clarence Sparks, a rising third-year student at University of North Texas Health Science Center Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine.
The Lone Star Caucus raises funds for the scholarships from members within the caucus, and TMA’s Office of Trust Fund Administration manages donation collection via a 501(c)(3) charitable fund.
Donations can be made online (login required) or by sending a check, payable to Lone Star Caucus Scholarship, c/o TMA Finance Department, 401 W. 15th St., Austin, TX 78701-1680.
Applications for the 2022 Lone Star Caucus Medical Student Scholarships will open next spring. Questions about the scholarships can be directed to the caucus via email.
