COVID-19 Vaccines Report, March 16, 2021: Updated Guidance on Vaccines Per Vial

Distribution and Prioritization

The Department of State Health Services (DSHS) hosts weekly meetings of the Expert Vaccine Allocation Panel (EVAP). Find details below and check this DSHS webpage for updates.  

  • Updated Guidance on Vaccines Per Vial: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has updated guidance to limit the number of vaccines per vial for all three vaccines currently available. In addition, only full doses should be administered; vaccines from one vial should not be mixed with another vial to create a full dose; and facilities should not refreeze vaccines, CDC said.     • Pfizer/BioNTech: One vial should contain six 0.3-milliliter doses;
    • Moderna: One vial should contain 10 doses of 0.5 milliliters each;
    • Janssen/Johnson & Johnson: One vial should contain five 0.5-milliliter doses.
     
  • More Vaccines Coming to Texas: Another 656,810 first doses of COVID-19 vaccine will be delivered to 445 facilities across Texas this week, along with 200,000 doses to be delivered to pharmacies and federally qualified health centers directly from the federal government, the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) said. The state also has ordered 578,320 doses intended as the second dose. Read more information.
