TMA Minority Scholarships Support Incoming Medical Students

Remember the excitement you felt when you were accepted to medical school? Across Texas, many students are experiencing that same excitement. But those students also are likely figuring out how to fund the next four years.

To help make that decision easier for some students, the Texas Medical Association’s Diversity in Medicine Scholarship Program offers assistance for members of racial minorities that are underrepresented in Texas medical schools and the state’s physician workforce.

TMA created the Minority Scholarship Program in 1998 to help diversify the physician workforce and better meet Texans’ health care needs. Students who are Black, Hispanic/Latino, or Native American are eligible for the $10,000 scholarships.

“TMA is committed to addressing health disparities, and the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed even more,” said Dallas internist Sue Bornstein, MD, chair of TMA’s Committee on Loans and Scholarships. “These scholarships are a concrete way TMA helps ensure the continued representation of minority students in our medical schools and eventually in our workforce.”

Scholarships are awarded to one student at each of Texas’ 15 medical schools.

Students who will enter medical school this fall can apply for the scholarships until March 25. In addition to the application, students must submit an essay and provide a letter of acceptance with the intent to attend. TMA will notify winning candidates in April.

“If you know someone who could benefit from these scholarships, please encourage them to apply,” said Dr. Bornstein.

TMA's 2021 Minority Scholarship Program is made possible with a grant from the TMA Foundation (TMAF) thanks to the TMAF Trust Fund of Dr. Roberto J. and Agniela (Annie) M. Bayardo; the TMAF Patrick Y. Leung, MD, Minority Scholarship Endowment; and generous gifts from H-E-B and physicians and their families.
