Although TexMed 2020 has been canceled, and the Texas Medical Association House of Delegates meeting has been suspended, Diana L. Fite, MD, still will take office as TMA’s 155th president Saturday.

Dr. Fite, an emergency medicine physician practicing in Houston for 40 years, unanimously won the TMA president-elect position at the 2019 meeting of the House of Delegates.

Visit TMA’s Facebook page at noon Saturday to watch a live broadcast of her installation and address. The ceremony will include remarks from current TMA President David C. Fleeger, MD, who will transition to immediate past president.

This is only the second time in TMA history that the House of Delegates has been unable to convene. The first was in 1945, at the end of World War II. TMA leadership at that time added a special provision in TMA’s bylaws allowing the board of directors to act as a “Disaster Board” when there is a “catastrophe of national proportion.”

The TMA Board declared itself a Disaster Board last month, allowing it to perform certain functions normally performed and approved by the house.

The board also will elect uncontested candidates for other TMA leadership positions Saturday.

All contested elections have been postponed until the board determines the health crisis has concluded and the House of Delegates is able to function.
