Do you qualify for a health professional shortage area (HPSA) bonus from Medicare? Check the HPSA status as of Dec. 31 for ZIP code areas where you provide services — the status of a ZIP Code on Dec. 31 determines the status for the entire next year.
You can find designated shortage areas on the Health Resources and Services Administration website. Check the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Physician Bonus page to see if you need to add the AQ modifier to your claim to receive the bonus payment or if the ZIP Code area in which you rendered services will automatically receive the HPSA bonus payment.
And remember, physicians practicing in a HPSA are eligible for an additional 10 percent of the Medicare electronic heath record incentives.
