Medicare’s Quality Payment Program Won’t Support Internet Explorer 11

Due to security concerns, Medicare’s Quality Payment Program (QPP) will no longer support the Internet Explorer (IE) 11 browser beginning on Oct. 13, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has announced.

CMS made the change because Microsoft will end technical support for IE 11 – the final version of the Internet Explorer browser – on June 15, 2022. IE 11 was released in 2013.

Beginning on Oct. 13, physicians accessing the QPP website must use a modern and supported browser such as Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, which users can download for free.

To avoid other possible security concerns, physicians participating in QPP also should make sure their computers are running on Windows 10. (If you’re not sure what version of Windows you are running, the easiest way to find out is to click the magnifying-glass [search] icon on the lower left side of your screen and type in “Windows version.” This should provide a system summary that includes your current version.)

For details about how to upgrade to Windows 10, check out the Windows 10 page on the Microsoft website. Computers running on earlier versions are vulnerable to cyberattacks, so be sure to take this and other steps to protect your computer.

Questions about the IE change may be directed to the Quality Payment Program at (866) 288-8292 Monday through Friday, from 7 am to 7 pm CT, or by email. Customers who are hearing impaired can dial 711 to be connected to a Telecommunications Relay Services communications assistant.

For questions about QPP and other office technologies, contact the Texas Medical Association’s Health Information Technology Department by calling (800) 880-5720 or by email
