Give Parents the Facts on Adolescents and the Pfizer Vaccine With This TMA Flyer

Now that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends COVID-19 vaccination for anyone 12 years and older, and the Food and Drug Administration approved Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine for adolescents, you’re likely fielding questions from parents about the importance and safety of administering the vaccine to their kids.

That’s why the Texas Medical Association’s Outpatient Workgroup created a flyer in English and Spanish with important, to-the-point information about the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for adolescents that you can distribute to parents, or post in your office.

You also should make sure you are enrolled in the Texas Vaccines for Children Program to administer the COVID-19 vaccine to adolescents.

“TMA wants to help our community of physicians get the word out and share safety information surrounding the COVID vaccination with our membership. This flyer enables us to do just that,” said New Braunfels family physician Emily Briggs, MD, chair of the workgroup.

Among other key notes, the TMA flyer lets parents know that:

  • The long-term effect of COVID-19 infection in children is unknown, but research shows some children who have recovered from a mild case of the disease may have long-term inflammation in the heart and lungs.

  • Even if an adolescent’s own symptoms are mild when the child develops COVID-19, the child can spread infection to family members who can’t be vaccinated because of age or certain health conditions.

  • The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was monitored for safety and effectiveness in children 12 and older, just as it was tested for adults.

  • The vaccine is safe to receive along with other routine vaccines. So if your child is behind on HPV, meningococcal, and other required vaccines, it’s a good time to catch up.

  • Both the vaccine and the associated visit are free for you and your child if getting the COVID-19 shot is the only purpose of the visit.
