Funded by an American Medical Association grant, the Texas Medical Association’s newest podcast, A Better Question, dissects the conversations physicians have with patients to build trust.
“I’ve noticed people embracing disagreement for disagreement’s sake … and while there are ways to explain this, I wonder, could we be asking the wrong questions?” host Thomas Kim, MD, Austin psychiatrist, said in the podcast’s introduction.
Dr. Kim will explore various health care and medical topics with his guests in episodes released every other week. “With the goal of supporting better health and wellness, we will reconsider questions that tend to spiral into unhelpful distress,” he said.
Future episodes will tackle confusing claims surrounding important topics like nutrition, behavioral health, and cancer.
In the inaugural episode, Dr. Kim speaks with two pediatricians, Marjan Linnell, MD, and Tammy Camp, MD, about what they are hearing from patients regarding childhood vaccinations. Together, they describe how physicians and patients can improve confidence and address the trend of falling vaccination rates.
“Families who had previously vaccinated all their children suddenly were questioning vaccines and then often downright refusing [them],” Dr. Camp said.
Dr. Linnell described her clinic’s balance between families who choose not to vaccinate their children and those concerned about potential exposure to vaccine-preventable diseases as a result.
