Scholarship to Bring Three Students Closer to a Medical Career

Three Texas medical students have won scholarships of $1,000 each from the Texas Medical Association’s 50-Year Club in recognition of their outstanding academic performance.

The 50-Year Club is made up of Texas physicians who graduated from medical school 50 years ago or more. Since its establishment in 1984, club members have contributed to the success of the next generation of physicians. The 50-Year Club Scholarship was established in 2005. Since then, the club has awarded more than $24,000 to more than 30 Texas medical students.

The 2019 50-Year Club Scholarship winners are:

Lillien_chenLillien Chen, a fourth-year medical student at The University of Texas Medical Branch School of Medicine. “Fourth year is an incredibly exciting time – traveling to different programs and connecting with others who share the same approach to medicine as an art of healing,” Ms. Chen said. “However, this interview season does not come without some personal difficulties. I have taken out loans each year to support my studies, and this year even more so than before. This scholarship means a great deal to me and will make a considerable difference in easing my financial burden.”
Lauren_MurphyLauren Murphy, a fourth-year student at UT Health San Antonio Long School of Medicine. “I decided to become a doctor after watching my dad battle and ultimately lose his fight to brain cancer,” Ms. Murphy said. “I returned to my home city for medical school, and I hope to become an OB/Gyn upon graduation. As I am relying solely on student loans, your generosity helps me tremendously on my journey to become a physician.”
Alexander_DoanAlexander Doan, a fourth-year student at the University of North Texas Health Science Center Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine. “This award will help me achieve my goal of becoming a family physician who will participate in community policies and programs,” Mr. Doan said. “As I travel around the state searching for a residency program, this award gives me confidence that I will be able to find the program that will help me achieve my career goals as a physician.”

Membership in the 50-Year Club is voluntary. To join or if you have questions, contact Chris Johnson at (800) 880-1300 ext.1602, or via email.
