Biography of TMA President David C. Fleeger, MD

David C. Fleeger, MD, TMA President 2019-20

David C. Fleeger, MD, was installed as the Texas Medical Association’s 154th president on May 18, 2019 in Dallas.

Dr. Fleeger is a board-certified colon and rectal surgeon and managing partner of his nine-member group practice in Austin, Texas. Caring for patients every day enables Dr. Fleeger to observe the best — and sometimes the most aggravating — parts of medicine. One of his priorities will be to work to remove barriers between physicians and the patients who need their care.

Dr. Fleeger believes TMA’s greatest strength lies in advocating for physicians so they can focus more on their patients and less on filling out forms and other bureaucratic tasks.

Dr. Fleeger has worked to protect the patient/physician relationship during his 28 years as a TMA member. He first served as the TMA Young Physician Section’s delegate to the American Medical Association. Dr. Fleeger eventually rose to become secretary and later vice-chair of the TMA Board of Trustees. He represents Texas as a delegate to the AMA House of Delegates and is active in TEXPAC, and the TMA Foundation.

An avid traveler and photographer, Dr. Fleeger makes volunteer medical mission trips to Guatemala each year, for which St. David’s selected him to receive the HCA Dr. Thomas Frist Humanitarian Award. In 2012, Travis CMS honored Dr. Fleeger with the Gold Headed Cane Award as Physician of the Year.

Jamie, Dr. Fleeger’s wife of 34 years, works as a physician assistant in family medicine.
