The future of medicine received a boost with more than $14,000 in donations to a TMAF endowment that supports medical student scholarships. It was established in 2021 by Dr. Mahendra Patel and his wife Dr. Shakuntula Patel, Irving.
The Patels as well as several family members and friends were recognized for their generosity at a reception held during TMA’s TexMed meeting in May in Fort Worth. They collectively donated to the corpus of the endowment as well as funded three $2,100 scholarships which have been awarded to medical students this year!
“I am proud to establish an endowment at the TMA Foundation that not only supports the education of medical students in need but supports those students who aspire to care for Texans with the greatest health needs. I have felt great satisfaction from helping others. I know this from my medical practice and the health clinic volunteering I currently do as a retired physician.”
Mahendra Patel, MD, Irving
The Patel endowment supports scholarships to Texas medical school students entering the second, third or fourth year of medical school who have financial need, self-identify as of Hispanic, Asian, or Black descent and describes, through the required essay, an aspiration to serve low-income Texans. This scholarship is administered by the Lubbock County Medical Society and its medical student scholarship program in concert with Texas Tech University Health Science Center School of Medicine in Lubbock.
If you are as passionate as the Patel’s about reducing the financial barriers to becoming a physician for those aspire to improve the health of all Texans, please contact TMAF executive director, Lisa Stark Walsh, at 512 370-1666 or lisa.walsh@texmed.org to explore establishing a fund or endowment at TMAF.
