Empowering Our Alliance: A Year of Energy, Purpose, and Growth

By Catherine Harrison, Smith CMSA President, and Mercedes Dossa, TMAA VP of Community Engagement

As Smith County Medical Society Alliance embarked on this year, our alliance was infused with a renewed sense of energy and purpose. We understood that to thrive and continue serving our members and the community effectively, we needed to know our “why.”

Our board members challenged themselves to answer this question: “Why am I an alliance member?” And then the age-old question: “What’s in it for me?” The answers empowered our highly talented board to use their skills and creativity to guide our journey and provide clarity.

Personal Touches to Boost Membership
To increase our membership, we adopted a three-pronged approach. First, we ensured our programs and projects resonated with potential members so their time and resources would be well invested. We emphasized enjoyable, social, and educational events.

Secondly, we considered the needs of our young members by offering programs where they could bring their preschool children, making participation more accessible and inclusive.

Lastly, we implemented a personal outreach strategy. I engaged with potential members, showing interest in their concerns and aspirations. We extended this approach to our board and membership, fostering meaningful connections. Expanding leadership roles to include designated volunteers for program committees increased involvement, enhanced connections within our community, and allowed members to use their talents for the greater good.

Planning and Promoting Our Programs
Our journey to identify, plan, and promote our programs began in May with a membership survey. The insights validated existing needs and unveiled hidden talents within our membership.

Our dedicated planning team (my advisor, the program vice president, and me) then meticulously planned the year, providing a diverse menu to appeal to many members. We aimed for family-friendly events and included medical students and residents. To spread the word, we relied on the Monday Memo, social media, and personal invitations. We went the extra mile by including a handwritten note and invitation in the welcome packets of medical students. We also just kicked off a monthly podcast to connect with our members, educate them about our community projects, and spread the word of upcoming fun programs. It’s easy and a lot of fun.

One standout event is the Heels for Healing style show, which consistently draws a crowd, often with members bringing guests or potential new members. Additionally, the upcoming Twirl Your Girl, a dance extravaganza and barbecue dinner, will serve a dual purpose by including spouses and acting as our guest day. Resident and early career physicians also will be invited.

Expanding Our Partnerships
Our commitment to the community has led to expanded partnerships with the medical community. In addition to providing scholarships for nursing and medical school students, we’ve collaborated with Bethesda Health Clinic, a local facility catering to the un- or underinsured. A joint Doctor Day’s celebration will raise funds for the clinic.

Our alliance is poised for a year of growth, community impact, and membership engagement. By staying true to our “why” and constantly innovating, we look forward to a year filled with exciting events and meaningful partnerships that strengthen our bond with each other and the community we serve.
