Coming Soon at TMA: “The State of Public Health in Texas”

Join the Texas Medical Association and the Texas Public Health Coalition (TPHC) – in-person or via streaming – as John Hellerstedt, MD, commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services, reports on “The State of Public Health in Texas” on Thursday, Aug. 11, from noon to 1 pm CT.

He’ll discuss how Texas fared in various facets of public health during the COVID-19 pandemic and what lies ahead.

“One of the most striking aspects of this crisis is how it has come in waves. Pandemic planning and response have gone through multiple iterations,” Dr. Hellerstedt wrote in a commentary for the February 2021 edition of Texas Medicine. “The scientific community has continually made discoveries and advances in understanding the virus, how to prevent it, and how to treat it. Unfortunately, this can also lend an appearance of contradictory information or a lack of reliability, which strains public trust.”

Dr. Hellerstedt’s presentation, part of the TMA/TPHC Distinguished Speaker Series, will be held in the Thompson Auditorium at the TMA building at 401 W. 15th St. in Austin, and also will be carried on Facebook Live. The deadline to register is Aug. 5. Complimentary lunch will be provided at 11:30 am for in-person attendees.

The TMA Distinguished Speaker Series is made possible through a grant from the TMA Foundation.
