One of the greatest gifts physicians and their spouses can share with each other and others is a sense of their own inner strength.

Psychologist Robert J. Wicks, PsyD, will share his insights and best practices at the Texas Medical Association Alliance’s ALLMED Annual Conference keynote presentation, “Riding the Dragon: Strengthening the Inner Life of the Physician and Medical Family,” on Friday, April 29, from 10 to 11:30 am at the Hilton Americas-Houston.

Practical, lively, and full of relevant examples, this presentation is designed to enhance resilience, improve self-care, and enhance gaining, maintaining, and regaining a healthy perspective.

ALLMED is held in conjunction with TexMed 2022. TMA physicians, TMA Alliance members, and medical students all are invited to attend the keynote presentation.

By discussing psychological approaches to secondary stress (the pressures experienced in reaching out to others), Dr. Wicks will share how physicians and their spouses can extend their presence to patients, colleagues, and family without losing their own inner fire in the process.

Program topics will include:

  • Understanding the sources of secondary stress;
  • The four types of friends needed in one’s interpersonal network;
  • Developing a realistic but rich self-care protocol; and
  • The necessity of a simple reflective regimen (mindfulness).

Dr. Wicks is co-author of the second edition of Overcoming Secondary Stress in Medical and Nursing Practice, and author of The Simple Care of a Hopeful Heart: Mentoring Yourself in Difficult Times.
