Apply Now: Scholarships for Students Who Want to Serve the Underserved
By Tammy Wishard

Once Texas medical students become physicians, the Lone Star Caucus hopes to keep them in Texas, especially in underserved areas. That’s the aim of the Lone Star Caucus (LSC) Medical Student Scholarship

Medical students who are members of county medical societies within the LSC are now invited to apply.

The LSC, made up of the smaller, nonmetro county medical societies, gives the scholarships annually to third- and fourth-year medical students who are enrolled in good standing in a Texas medical school, have demonstrated interest in serving medically underserved populations in Texas, and exhibit strong leadership skills. Five scholarships were awarded in 2021, the inaugural year of the scholarship. Read about the 2022 awardees.

“These scholarships for students from the Lone Star Caucus counties help ensure continued access to medical care for underserved Texans,” said LSC Scholarship/Awards Chair Nefertiti dePont, MD, of Spring. “The caucus wants to encourage future physicians to return home and practice locally.”

Applications are available on the Lone Star Caucus website and due by April 3. Email for more information.

The scholarship is supported by contributions from physician members of the Lone Star Caucus. TMA’s Office of Trust Fund Administration manages donations via a (501)(c)3 charitable fund.

Donations can be made online (login required) or by sending a check, payable to Lone Star Caucus Scholarship, c/o TMA Finance Department, 401 W. 15th St., Austin, TX 78701-1680.
