Subject: TMA's Responsibility to Protect the Public

Whereas, Our members are aware of multiple solicitations published in widely distributed lay publications urging people to seek various medical and surgical interventions in other countries, offered by practitioners who often tout credentials not recognized by any U.S. licensing jurisdiction, or who claim "board certification" by boards not recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties; and
Whereas, Our members have recognized the need to care for people who have been injured or suffer debilitating complications from poorly-performed and/or unnecessary procedures carried out in inappropriate environments without use of commonly accepted standards of care or regulatory oversight which is integral to the U.S. health care system; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Texas Medical Association prepare a letter or other communication to major print media outlets asking them to refrain from accepting advertisements which offer clearly misleading information to Texans; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Texas Medical Association offer to review suspect advertising copy and advise and counsel regarding its probity and appropriateness .
