Three new Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes are now on the list of COVID-19 lab testing codes, effective June 25.

The new codes are:

  • Category I code 87426 to provide increased specificity for reporting immunoassay antigen testing, and
  • Two new proprietary laboratory analyses testing codes, 0223U and 0224U.

The American Medical Association says new code 87426 “is intended for use as the industry standard for accurate reporting and tracking of antigen tests using immunofluorescent or immunochromatographic technique for the detection of biomolecules produced by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.” Long, medium, and short descriptors of this and the other COVID-19 CPT codes are on the AMA website.

CPT code 87426 is a child, or indented, code under the more general parent code 87301 (infectious agent antigen detection by enzyme immunoassay technique, qualitative or semiquantitative, multiple-step method).

Find more details about all three new codes at AMA’s CPT ® Assistant Special Edition: June Update.
