The 2019 Texas Legislature set up a statewide network to increase physicians’ access to mental health services via tele-consulting, and now you can learn about it at an upcoming CME event on Thursday, March 12 at Ascension Seton Bastrop Hospital from 6:30-7:45 pm.

Psychiatrists from The University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School will educate physicians and medical professionals on the identification and management of pediatric anxiety and how they can use the Child Psychiatric Access Network (CPAN) – an 11-region, statewide network of psychiatric centers designed to provide telemedicine-based consulting on mental health issues.

CPAN is expected to begin providing services to medical professionals in May.

Dell Medical School is the psychiatric center, or hub, for Central Texas. Each hub provides family and pediatric physicians with telephone consultation for potential psychiatric cases as well as CME.

CPAN is a key part of a much larger mental health initiative created by the 2019 Texas Legislature called the Texas Child Mental Health Care Consortium. Aside from CPAN, the consortium also will help schools respond to mental health needs among students, expand the psychiatric workforce by paying for psychiatric positions and fellowships, and provide money for research on mental health in Texas.
