As practices shift from pay-for-performance to value based care, the use of remote patient monitoring (RPM) devices is on the rise. 

But how do you successfully implement RPM technology, such as glucose meters, heart rate or blood pressure monitors, and other devices for monitoring and treating chronic illnesses like diabetes or cardiovascular disease? 

Answers to that question and many more can be found in the American Medical Association’s (AMA’s) Digital Health Implementation Playbook, which documents the most efficient path to implementing new digital health solutions, such as remote patient monitoring devices. 

When designing the playbook, AMA consulted with small private practices and large health systems, in rural and urban settings, with high income and Medicaid-dependent populations. It is designed for care teams and administrators in practices of all sizes and specialties. 

It includes key steps, best practices, and resources such as worksheets, charts, and checklists to help you organize, prioritize, and document important steps of the process. 

Currently, the playbook focuses on remote patient monitoring, but it will be updated to include new content related to specific digital health solutions over time. 

In addition to the playbook, there are interactive online modules that provide the same information in an interactive, digital format, including short videos.
