The Texas Medical
Association Political Action Committee (TEXPAC) has named Mrs. Cheryl Jones of Temple
as the 2017 recipient of its “June Bratcher Award” for remarkable service to
the organization.
TEXPAC surprised her with
the award on May 6 during TexMed, the Texas Medical Association’s (TMA’s)
annual conference, held this year in Houston.
TEXPAC presents the June
Bratcher Award for Political Action every two years to a physician’s spouse who
was an outstanding volunteer in a federal or state political campaign. TEXPAC
modeled the award in 1987 after a similar American Medical Association (AMA)
Political Action Committee award, whose first recipient was Ms. June Bratcher
of San Antonio. The honorees are members of the TMA Alliance, a volunteer
organization of TMA physicians and spouses. Mrs. Jones served as TMAA president
in 2013-14.
Mrs. Jones, a community
volunteer and activist, is married to TMA physician member Russell Jones, MD,
an emergency physician with Scott and White.
Her nominators describe
Mrs. Jones as a tireless volunteer willing to work in support of any
TEXPAC-endorsed candidate, doing any task.
“She has extensive
experience as a pro-medicine grassroots activist. During the election cycle,
Cheryl was instrumental in the successful campaigns of both myself and Rep. Hugh
Shine,” said Sen. Dawn Buckingham (R- Lakeway), who nominated Mrs. Jones for
the award.
Mrs. Jones has been a
member of TEXPAC since 1994 and has served as the TMA Alliance representative
to the TMA Council on Legislation and the TEXPAC Executive Committee. She also has
attended TMA’s “First Tuesdays at the Capitol” since its inception in 2003.
TMA is the largest state medical society in the nation,
representing more than 50,000 physician and medical student members. It is
located in Austin and has 110 component county medical societies around the
state. TMA’s key objective since 1853 is to improve the health of all Texans.
TEXPAC speaks on behalf of more than 50,000 Texas physicians and
medical students, and nearly 5,000 alliance members. Organized in 1962, TEXPAC
is one of the oldest political action committees in Texas. TEXPAC also is one
of the largest bipartisan PACs in the state and ranks first in size among other
state medical association PACs.
