Optimal Rehydration of Student Athletes: The Texas Medical Association encourages regular physical activity as necessary for a healthy lifestyle and also recognizes physical activity in hot weather can lead to heat illness. TMA supports the most recent recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics for heat- related stress and exercise. Physicians can play an important role in promoting heat safety by educating patients and families about the importance of effective heat-illness prevention strategies that include proper preparation, modification, and hydration, and appropriate recovery. Physicians can also participate in school health advisory councils to help develop and implement heat-illness prevention and management strategies (CSA Rep. 3-A-03; amended CM-CAH Rep 1-A-13).
