280.014 Chelation Therapy

Chelation Therapy: The Texas Medical Association lauds scientific advancements, which have been made in the treatment of atherosclerotic vascular disease, the leading cause of death in the United States. There is scientific documentation that the use of chelation therapy is not effective in the treatment of cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and cancer. The side effects of chelation therapy are not innocuous; side effects include kidney failure, bone marrow depression, rapid fall in blood pressure to shock levels, and sudden death (Council on Scientific Affairs, p 129, A-94; reaffirmed CSA Rep. 6-A-04; reaffirmed CSPH Rep. 2-A-14).
