95.005Food and Drug Administration: The FDA is required to assure the safety and efficacy of human and animal drugs, biological products and therapeutic devices. The mission, structure and responsibilities of the FDA was the subject of an advisory committee. Known as the Edwards Advisory Committee, the group issued its final report in May 1991. The Texas Medical Association expressed concern regarding recommendations of the committee and recommended that it should reflect a modernized role for the FDA, clearly focused on patient protection, through ensuring the safety and efficacy of drugs, biologicals and therapeutic devices and that the AMA review and critique the committee report prior to implementation of its recommendations (Committee on Mental Health and Mental Retardation, p 147-148, A-92; deleted CSA Rep. 2-A-02).
