Behavior Evaluation in Long-Term Care Facilities: Behavior disorders of dementing illnesses are clinical complications that should not be classified and labeled as regulatory violations. Clinical complications are medical issues that should only be evaluated by qualified facility surveyors. Surveyors should be educated about the differences between sexual behavior as a result of mental illness or dementia and sexual abuse. Long-term care facilities should not be cited for patient sexual behavior as a result of mental illness or dementia. The Texas Medical Association in no way supports any form of sexual abuse (Amended Res. 405-I-99; reaffirmed CHSO Rep. 1-A-09).
